[#54] AWR broadcasts on FM Radio in the Megacities of India

Of the more than 1 billion people living in India, most are Hindus who, many people say, worship thousands – even millions – of gods. While India is a secular republic, with freedom of religion as a fundamental right, religion greatly influences all aspects of life. Because of your generosity, AWR has been broadcasting via shortwave radio across the borders and restrictions of this exotic land for years, with success measured in many souls for Christ.

But as the nation continues to grow, more people seek employment in India’s megacities. In fact, at least one fourth of India’s population is now made up of city dwellers, who listen to very little shortwave radio – cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bhopal have as many as 20,000,000 residents. Others like Calcutta, Chennai and Bangalore have 10,000,000 and more residents. Hyderabad has 6,100,000. In those seven cities alone, that’s nearly 100,000,000 people who could be reached with the gospel. And, FM radio is the way to do it, especially during the day when most people are trapped in commuter traffic.

UPDATE: Earlier in 2011, a matching gift challenge by two donors, and an enthusiastic response helped AWR to reach the $200,000 goal. However, the local church in India is still wanting to expand into more major cities with FM radio and to do it in more languages. Your continued support for this project is still needed.
